Parent Groups PDF Print E-mail

The Parent Groups (Stewart Boosters, Lincoln PTG, JH PIE Team and WHS PTO) look out for our schools by helping get supplies and materials. When the WHS PTO was formed, they coordinated all four Parent Groups to split the membership cost to an organization called Naeir which allows members to obtain new, free products that have been donated. Individual parents from the Parent Groups volunteer to go to Galesburg, IL to pick up our orders to avoid the S&H charges. This is all volunteer work and has no cost to the district. This teamwork allows each school to get lots of supplies and materials, while splitting a membership within our school district. Although it's a huge undertaking to coordinate orders, sort orders, etc; it is well worth the effort. The program is working well, money is being saved and the Parent Groups supply our schools with lots of great supplies and materials. Pictured here shows a recent shipment from Naeir being sorted out for distribution to the individual schools. Thank you Parent Groups!

Academically, the junior year is a perfect time to evaluate student preparedness for college courses. We would like to offer JUNIORS the opportunity to evaluate their skills by taking the COMPASS® exam at the Washington Kirkwood Center before the school year ends. This exam is free of charge. Students will need their social security number to take the exam. Questions about social security numbers can be directed to the Washington Kirkwood Center at 653-4655.

We will provide school transportation during the school day to take the COMPASS® exam. It is a 90-minute computer-adaptive college placement test which helps to evaluate students' skill levels in reading, writing, and math, place students in appropriate courses, and connect them to the resources they need to achieve academic success. Students may sign up in the counseling office for one of the testing times offered from May 12-25, 2011 (8:20-9:50, 9:50-11:20, 11:20-12:40, 1:20-2:50, 3:00-4:30). If students would like to prepare for the exam, ACT provides a COMPASS® Prep at this website: http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html. Students may also take the exam during the summer by calling the Washington Kirkwood Center (653-4655). If you have questions, please contact the HS Counseling Office at 653-4245.

Thank you to the Washington High School PTO for recently funding three iPads for Special Ed & ELL students. The iPads encourage/ assist in reading skills, eliminate students needing to carry around heavy books, help students get organized (they keep everything in one place!) and provide students with instant access to material. Two iPads were presented to Jay Zieglowsky's classroom and one iPad was presented to Kim Scherer's classroom. Pictured here are (left to right): Alicia Vittetoe (President WHS PTO), Kim Linnenkamp (Treasurer, WHS PTO), Tyler (student), Lexi (student) and Jay Zieglowsky (Teacher). Thank you Parent Groups! PDF Print E-mail

Here at the Washington School District, we are very lucky to have such great teams of Parent Groups: Stewart Boosters, Lincoln PTG, JH PIE Team (Parents In Education) and the WHS PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization). We want to extend a BIG THANK-YOU for all that you do! The missions of these groups is to establish and maintain a working relationship between parents, school and community; to enhance the educational experience by supporting academic and enrichment activities; and to improve the environment within our schools by providing volunteer and financial support. The groups sponsor projects and events that will improve the educational opportunities within our schools. The teams work on grants for our schools, coordinate the donation of items for our school, work on fund-raisers throughout the year to fund projects, and volunteer TIME in making our schools better for our students and community! If you would like to be more involved in your students school; we encourage you to join in the FUN! Pictured here are WHS PTO Officers presenting an iPad to Kim Scherer's classroom which was funded through projects; left to right- Alicia Vittetoe (WHS PTO President), Kim Scherer (Teacher), Tish Johnson (WHS PTO Officer) and Kim Linnenkamp (WHS PTO Treasurer).
