WJHS Students Visit Washington D.C. PDF Print E-mail

While most students were starting their summer break, 40 WJHS students traveled to Washington D.C. to explore the rich history of our nation's capitol.  Sites explored included the Capitol, the Crime and Punishment Museum, Ford's Theater, Mount Vernon, and Arlington National Cemetery.  Highlights of the trip included a "behind the scenes" tour at Mt. Vernon based on the movie National Treasure 2, and a trip to the top of the Washington Monument to see the city at night.  It was an incredible trip with an incredible group of students!!

Our new superintendent is a great team player!  Dr. Mike Jorgensen has hit the ground running by getting up to speed on issues and projects.  He has focused time on the Middle School renovation, Budget and Public Relations.  Dr. Jorgensen has been in the education field for the past 29 years; most recently with 13 years at Southeast Webster-Grand School District (Superintendent for 12 years & High School Principal for 1 year).  Prior to that he was School- to -Work & Tech Prep Coordinator (AEA 5, Fort Dodge), Marketing Teacher/ Coach (Perry High School), Business Education Teacher (Marshalltown High School).

His credentials include: BA degree in Human Resource Mgmt from Drake University College.  He holds Teaching Endorsements from Drake University in Business Education & PE.  He achieved a Masters Degree & Specialist from Drake in Education Administration.  He holds a doctorate in Education Administration from California Coast University in Santa Ana, California.

He plans to promote first class facilities that match the superior level of education we provide.  He also plans on spending his energy in building partnerships with neighboring school districts and educational resources in the community to expand student opportunities.  Dr. Jorgensen recently moved here with wife, Virginia, who is a branch manager for a nearby bank.  They have 2 daughters Angela, 23, Los Angeles, California and Jennifer, 20, a full time student at Grandview University.

Dr. Mike Jorgensen is a tremendous asset to our school district and we are very proud to have him in our Washington Community School family.  Welcome!

Congratulations on your retirement Dave!  THANK YOU for all your hard work and dedication to our school district!

Future School Transformation PDF Print E-mail

We are very excited about the transition of the Middle School & High School Buildings.  Although the switchover would not move students until the 2012/ 2013 school year; the preparation has already begun.  In the 2012/ 2013 school year the Middle School building would house grades 7-12 while the current high school would transform into the new Middle School and be done twelve months later.

The structure of the high school facility is very sound and durable.  We are proud of this historical landmark within the school district and the city of Washington.  Unfortunately, it is not adequate to house the high school grades and meet the complicated demands for a high school in today’s era.  We are pleased it would be a fantastic three-grade middle school facility.  The plan includes a complete gutting and restoration of the current interior while maintaining the historical and sound exterior.

With the economy, we are uniquely positioned for an affordable construction.  The bond issue for the new Middle School, to be presented in December or February, is the only project funded through a property tax assessment/bond issue.  The new High School is being funded by the local option sales tax.  We are very proud to have a sound business plan; one that capitalizes on our assets and controls budget.  The new Middle School plan gives our students a 21st century facility housed in a beautiful 19th century structure!
